While suburban areas continue to be surrounding by a healthy combination of both man made and organic commodities, city dwellers have learnt to live in an environment that is largely artificial. This project addresses the issue of residents of inner city suburbs bringing the natural world inside their apartments. It calls for a light, which in the midst of a concrete jungle can create a contrast between the organic and inorganic. My light allows city presiders to have access to fresh greens. The light also takes away from the homogenous characteristics of apartment blocks by allowing the end user to add a sense of individuality and personality to it. Hence the project students had to complete was related to medals. We look to family in difficult times. It is the loss of everyday connection and the link that is broken when there is a lack of involvement in daily activities due to hospitalisation, that makes children feel forgotten. This is where DiP comes in. A robot designed to bring together hospitalised children and their families like never before. DiP combines the technology used by Skype and Google maps to allow children to escape to their own homes whenever they feel the need. It gives children the chance to once again roam their home corridors, run around their backyard, play in their own room, sit with their family at the dinner table. The name DiP is an abbreviation of the names Damon and Pythias. The story of two friends Damon and Pythias comes from Greek mythology and is an idiomatic term for true friendship. DiP is also an abbreviation for 'domus partus' which in Latin translates to 'home delivery'. The robot is named DiP as it is designed to be the child's new best friend; a friend that can take him back to his home and family. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5753de5cd210b8ffb18a6237/1465728339306-S7LBTD83JFFOOF5SRQFV/3.4.jpg Work - Miscellaneous This pendant was made in my own time as part of a personal undertaking of work experience at an independent jewellery gallery and workshop in Perth, Western Australia. The pendant is sterling silver and is set with a rectangular cubic zirconia. The bale has the official stamp stating the grade of the silver. The making was a very precise job with the setting measured and remeasured using digital callipers as it was being pressed through a rolling mill. Micro torches were used for soldering. The tips of the claws holding the stone have been rounded using hand held machinery. The company specialises in image guided interventional procedures. Two characteristics found commonly in narcissists are that they conceal their true personality behind a false wall and that they have an unusual obsession with appearances. In regards to the obsession with appearances, I designed my furniture piece to be highly ornamental. As for the concealment of identity, the object appears to be a small coffee table at first glance, but upon closer inspection can be transformed into a chair, then rotated and flipped to form a stool. To further the concept of a hidden interior, the furniture has a natural plywood colour on the outside and is mahogany on the inside. The pattern itself is an abstract representation of the lake that, according to mythology, Narcissus stared into in order to admire his beauty. Two 'L' shaped objects were 3D printed to create holders for the back of the chair to rest on.
